Question: What is the name or style of photography from the 1940s & ’50s where skin is pale or bronze & hair contrasts?
It may have just been a function of the state of the art of photography technology at the time, but it is a distinctive look that is well recognized now as characteristic of that era. The recent TV commercials for the car “Avalon” with the pale skinned red head young beauty with the ruby red lips and contrasting red hair, captures this retro-period look. It is also evident with brunettes, blondes and other color schemes but is noted for how striking the colors look together in a classic vintage style.

Does this particular kind of period-based photography have a particular name, either for motion picture images or still photography? Is there one or more photographers who became known for creating this look and popularizing it? And what is the technique used in terms of lighting, exposure, film, etc., to get that look?

I’m not quite sure if there’s a particular name for it, but look up pinup photography. I know it’s more of like, well, pinup girls, but they have that style… just with… lingerie. As far as a technique today goes, just using the correct models and makeup and styling for the job. It’s not so much of the film style. If anything the film would just be desaturated a bit (to make it look cooler and older) or have a little bit of sepia added?
Hope that helps.
